Durmitor's Valley of Lakes is one of Montenegro's most enchanting natural landscapes — a broad glacial valley dotted with emerald and sapphire lakes, ringed by forested slopes and rocky peaks. The valley was shaped by powerful glaciers during the last ice age, leaving behind a series of depressions that filled with pristine mountain water over millennia.

This 3-hour easy hike traverses the valley floor, giving you an intimate sense of the scale and beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The terrain is gentle and well-marked, making it an ideal choice for families, beginners, and anyone seeking a peaceful immersion in Durmitor's landscape.

What You Will See

As you walk through the valley, your guide will point out the various lakes — each named in local tradition — and explain the fascinating glacial geology that created them. In spring and early summer, wildflowers carpet the meadows. Chamois and other alpine wildlife are frequently spotted on the surrounding slopes.

The valley's open character offers sweeping views of Durmitor's major peaks: Bobotov Kuk, Šljeme, and the rugged ridgelines of the massif. This is a trail where the journey itself is the destination — unhurried, beautiful, and deeply restorative.
