Few hikes in Montenegro offer such dramatic contrast in a single day as Škrka Lakes & Sušica Canyon. This 12km traverse begins in the high alpine world of the Škrka Lakes — a remote glacial basin enclosed by sheer limestone walls — and ends with vertiginous views into the depths of Sušica Canyon, where the river has carved through hundreds of meters of rock.

The route covers 500 meters of elevation gain across 7 hours of walking — hard-rated not because of extreme steepness, but because of the sustained terrain, the remote location, and the navigation required to link these two very different landscapes on a single trail.

What Makes This Route Unique

The transition from lake to canyon is the defining experience. After spending time in the enclosed, intimate world of the glacial lakes, the trail suddenly opens onto canyon perspectives that feel vertiginous and vast. The scale shift is dramatic and memorable.

Sušica Canyon, while less famous than Tara, is one of Durmitor's great geological features — a deep limestone gorge carved by the Sušica River, its walls home to rare plant communities and nesting raptors. Your guide will navigate the traverse route that connects these two environments, managing the terrain between them with expertise.
