The Škrčka Lakes rank among the most dramatic destinations in Durmitor National Park. Tucked into a high cirque between towering limestone peaks, these twin glacial lakes sit in a landscape of raw, elemental beauty — ice-cold water, sheer cliff walls, and an atmosphere of genuine mountain wilderness.

Reaching them requires earning it: 12.5km of hiking with 871 meters of elevation gain over nearly five hours. The trail climbs steadily through forest and alpine meadow before making a final push into the rocky cirque where the lakes sit. The upper basin, surrounded on three sides by near-vertical rock faces, feels like arriving at the heart of the mountain.

An Unforgettable Destination

The larger of the two Škrčka lakes is one of Durmitor's deepest, its dark water reflecting the surrounding peaks with mirror-like clarity on calm days. The scale of the surrounding walls — hundreds of meters of bare limestone — creates a powerful sense of place.

Your mountain guide will pace the ascent carefully across the 4-hour 45-minute journey, choosing the best line through the rocky upper terrain. This trail is classified as moderate despite its significant elevation gain, as the technical difficulty remains low — it is the distance and altitude that challenge you, not the terrain complexity.
