What to Expect
The Tara River — Europe's Deepest Canyon
The Tara River Canyon stretches 78 kilometers through the heart of Durmitor National Park, reaching a staggering depth of 1,333 meters. That makes it the deepest river canyon in Europe and the second deepest in the world, after the Grand Canyon. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tara River is often called the "Tear of Europe" for its exceptionally pure, turquoise-colored water.
Rafting on the Tara is the signature adventure of Durmitor and one of the most sought-after outdoor experiences in the Balkans.
What the Experience Is Like
From the moment you push off, the Tara reveals its magic. The water is so clear you can see the riverbed many meters below. Towering limestone cliffs rise on both sides, draped in old-growth forest. Along the way you will pass thundering waterfalls that cascade directly into the river, natural rock terraces perfect for a rest, and hidden swimming spots where the canyon opens into sunlit pools.
The route takes you beneath the famous Tara Bridge (Djurdjevica Tara Bridge), one of Montenegro's most iconic landmarks. Seeing it from below, framed by the canyon walls, is a perspective most visitors never get.
Two Special Stops
Every rafting trip includes two memorable stops along the way. The first is at Ljutica, widely regarded as the shortest river in Europe. This tiny tributary pours ice-cold, crystal-clear water into the Tara, and you will have a chance to taste it straight from the source.
The second stop is a natural swimming and cliff-jumping spot. Depending on the water level and your comfort, you can leap from rocks into deep pools or simply float in the calm turquoise water.
Summer vs Spring and Autumn
The character of the Tara changes with the seasons. During summer (July and August), water levels are lower, rapids are gentler, and the experience is ideal for families with children and first-time rafters. The water temperature is warmer, and the pace is relaxed.
In spring (May-June) and autumn (September-October), snowmelt and rainfall raise the water levels significantly. The rapids become more powerful and the ride more exhilarating — perfect for those seeking a stronger adrenaline rush. These shoulder seasons are favored by experienced rafters and adventure seekers.
