What Is Canyoning?
Canyoning is an adventurous outdoor activity that involves a combination of hiking, climbing, swimming, short jumps and rope descents through narrow river canyons. Around Durmitor, it means It is one of the most immersive outdoor activities you can experience - you do not observe the canyon from above, you move through it through cold clear water, sculpted limestone walls, waterfalls and places you cannot reach on a normal hike.
The Durmitor region offers three outstanding canyons, each with its own character and challenge level, making every experience distinct.
Professional Equipment and Safety
Safety is the foundation of every canyoning trip. All participants receive a complete set of professional-grade equipment:
- 5mm neoprene wetsuit — Full-body protection against cold water and abrasion
- Canyoning helmet — Impact-rated for rock environments
- Climbing harness — For rappelling and sliding sections
- Canyoning boots — Grip and protection on wet rock
- Ropes and technical gear — Managed entirely by your guide
- Waterproof dry bag — For essential personal items
All equipment is inspected before every trip and replaced on a strict maintenance schedule.

They have extensive experience in each canyon, with intimate knowledge of every section, every water level variation, and every potential hazard. With over 3,000 guests guided safely through these canyons, our team brings both technical skill and a deep respect for the environment.
What to Expect
A typical canyoning day begins with a briefing at the entrance point, where you receive your equipment and learn basic techniques: how to move through the canyon, which possible dangers to pay attention to, how to jump. The approach hike to the canyon entrance takes 5-15 minutes depending on the canyon.
Once inside, the world changes. Towering rock walls, the sound of rushing water, shafts of light cutting through narrow openings - the experience is unlike anything else in the Durmitor region. Your guide leads the way, setting up rappels, identifying safe routes through rock boulders, and ensuring everyone moves through each section safely.
After exiting the canyon, hike (which length depends on the canyon) brings you back to the vehicles. Groups celebrate with a well-earned meal at a local restaurant, which your guides arrange.
Nevidio Canyon — The Last Conquered Canyon in Europe
Nevidio Canyon holds a remarkable distinction: it was the last canyon in Europe to be fully explored, conquered in 1965 by a team of mountaineers. The name "Nevidio" translates roughly to "the unseen," and once you enter, you understand why. In places the canyon walls narrow to barely a meter apart, rising 300 meters above you and blocking out the sky.
The traverse through Nevidio is a genuine adventure. You will rappel down waterfalls, swim through deep pools of cold mountain water, navigate narrow passages, and scramble over boulders. The canyon is approximately 2 kilometers long, and the journey through it takes 3 to 4 hours depending on group pace and water levels.
Nevidio is available from June through September when water levels are safe for passage.
Grabovica Canyon — The Pre-Season Alternative
Grabovica Canyon opens earlier in the season, typically from May through June, before Nevidio becomes accessible. It offers a slightly different experience — wider passages, more swimming sections, and a somewhat less technical traverse. Grabovica is an excellent introduction to canyoning and a strong adventure in its own right.
When Nevidio is open, Grabovica remains available as a less demanding alternative for those who want the canyoning experience without the full intensity.
Who is canyoning for?
Canyoning is for active guests who are comfortable in water and ready for a wet, cold and physical day in nature. You do not need previous canyoning experience for every canyon — Tvrdan is a good first option, while Nevidio is longer, colder and more demanding.
We provide canyoning equipment: neoprene suit, helmet, harness, neoprene boots, ropes and dry bag. Before entering the canyon, the guide gives a safety briefing and decides the route based on water level, weather and group ability.
