There is something timeless about exploring Durmitor on horseback. The rhythm of hooves on mountain trails, the panoramic views unfolding at a natural pace, and the connection between rider and horse create an experience that feels rooted in centuries of Montenegrin highland tradition.

Our riding operation maintains over 20 horses, each carefully selected for their temperament, health, and suitability for trail riding. The horses know these routes intimately — many have spent their entire lives on the Durmitor plateau, and their sure-footedness on mountain terrain is remarkable.

Skilled Instructors

Every ride is led by experienced instructors who are both accomplished riders and knowledgeable about Durmitor's landscape, history, and wildlife. They match each guest with an appropriate horse based on experience level, weight, and comfort, and they manage the ride from start to finish.

For beginners, the first portion of each ride includes a gentle orientation where you learn the basics: how to steer, how to adjust your pace, and how to communicate with your horse using simple commands. Most guests are surprised how quickly they feel at ease.

Riding Routes

We offer several route options that showcase different aspects of Durmitor's landscape:

Lake Plateau Route — A scenic ride across the open plateau near Zabljak, passing through meadows with views of the surrounding peaks. This is our most popular route and ideal for first-time riders, offering gentle terrain and constant visual rewards.

Periodical Lakes Route — This route takes you to Durmitor's unique periodical lakes — bodies of water that appear and disappear with the seasons. Riding through these landscapes feels like entering another era, with wide grasslands and scattered pine forests framing the trail.

Devil's Lake Route — The most atmospheric of our rides, this route leads to Vrazje Jezero (Devil's Lake), one of Durmitor's glacial lakes. Local legend says it was the cradle of winged horses — a fitting destination for a horseback adventure. The route passes through dense forest before opening onto the lake's dark, still waters.

Practical Information

Horse riding tours operate from our base near Zabljak and are available throughout the season. A few things to keep in mind:

• Maximum rider weight: 110 kg — This is for the comfort and health of our horses. If you are close to or above this limit, please let us know when booking so we can pair you with an appropriate horse.
• No prior experience needed — All routes are suitable for beginners with the instructor briefing provided.
• Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes — Riding boots are ideal, but sturdy sneakers or hiking boots work well.
• All ages welcome — Families with children are a regular and welcome sight on our rides.
